Context and origin
A represents Agile. The two uses of DT represent Design Thinking and Digital Transformation. Together, A(DT)2 describes an Agile Design Thinking approach to Digital Transformation.
It fails when promising ideas cannot move coherently from a recognized business problem to a solution that people can test, adopt, and sustain. The A(DT)2 Framework was developed to address that execution gap.
Emerging from Dr. Gates' doctoral research and decades of transformation leadership, the framework brings Agile delivery and Design Thinking into a single operating model. Problems and opportunities enter a continually prioritized backlog; selected responses are explored, prototyped, tested, and released as practical increments of value.
The A(DT)2 Framework emerged from Dr. Gates' doctoral studies in 2022 and continued to evolve through research and practical application. It was formally published as a framework figure in his 2025 book, Digital Disruption: Exploring the Traits of a Successful Digital Transformation Strategy.
The result is not a one-time transformation plan. It is a repeatable system for learning, adapting, and directing investment toward the work that matters most—while keeping strategy, technology, and organizational change connected.
